How to generate more targeted traffic for your blog

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

Every blogger wants more traffic.  Not just any old traffic – we want more targeted  traffic. Credit card in hand traffic that converts into sales. How do we achieve this? One way is through search engine marketing which is a delicate balance between content and search engine optimization.

Some marketers will tell you that the only way to get more targeted traffic is to provide a continuous supply of fresh original content.  Other marketers disagree and argue that it is all about search engine optimization. Regardless of who is right and who is wrong, content and search engine optimization both play a role in achieving higher search engine rankings and getting more targeted traffic for your blog.

The important thing about content is that it must be related to the keyword you are targeting.  Using your keyword in the title, description, url and several times on the page or in the post boosts your chances of a top ranking even more. If you get this right your page or post is indexed and ranked fairly high up in the search engines for your keywords.

That is great but how do you get it to rank even higher?  The answer is backlinks!

Backlinks to your blog, page or post tell the search engines something about your blog. It tells them that your blog is popular and other sites or blogs are linking to it.

The main thing you must focus on with backlinking is the anchor text that you use to link back to your blog. If your blog is about “eBay” and you are linking back to your blog using “click here” as the anchor text, that is not worth anything to you. You need anchor text backlinks using “eBay” as the link. Make sure you are using your keywords as your anchor text when you link back to your blog.

It is also important to vary your anchor text as much as possible.  You do not want all the links pointing to your blog to have the same anchor text. Also, you want to link to deeper pages and posts in your blog.  This is called “deep linking”.

My experience is that although content and search engine optimization are effective means to get your blog to rank high in the search engines for your keywords, backlinks are even more effective.  Backlinking however is a long and painful process.

You can now use RSS to quickly create large numbers of quality backlinks to your blog or website.

There is a new Wordpress plugin that will create and submit a new RSS feed to the pre-configured RSS Aggregator websites when a new post or page is published. This automatically creates a large number of quality backlinks to your blog resulting in getting your blog indexed quickly and ranking well in the search engines.

This plugin also has a stand alone version that can be used to create RSS feeds for websites and web pages.

How to get your blog indexed and increase web traffic

Getting your blog indexed means that the blog is listed in the web directories and search engine sites and can be found when prospective readers do a search on your keywords in the search engines.

When you first start developing your blog, it is usually because you have something you want to express or you may be an internet marketer setting up a marketing blog. If you choose to share your blogging thoughts, you will want a steady stream of readers for your blog to be successful. More exposure to your blog means more readers and ultimately more sales. Blog exposure is important and one way to get this type of exposure is through blog indexing.

There are a number of things you can do to get your blog indexed.

The first and probably the most important is to provide regular fresh and original content in your blog pages and posts.  Never use duplicate content from PLR articles or other sites without completely rewriting it.  Keep your content simple, crisp and clear.  Write on topics that will be of interest to your readers and use keywords that are “buyer magnets”

The second thing you can do is to ping the major blog syndication sites as soon as you have added a new page or post to your blog.  This will tell them that there is new content available on your blog.

The third thing to do is to submit your blog to as many blog directories as you can.  Listing in the blog directories provide great backlinks which helps the search engines to pick up your blog and list it in a good position.  Many marketers advise that you should only submit to high traffic directories, but I do not agree.  Submit to every directory you can lay your hands on.

The next thing you should do is to spin or rewrite your blog posts and submit them to the social media sites.  This will not only help you to get great backlinks but it will draw visitors who are truly interested in your content, to your blog.  Just be careful not to spam the social media sites, as they will close your account.

Article marketing is a great way to get traffic, so the next thing to do is to spin your blog posts again and submit them as articles to the article directories.  Remember to set up the resource box for each article in such a way that you have a link back to your blog.

Although all the abovementioned techniques are great for getting your blog indexed,  there is one problem.  They all require a lot of time and effort to implement.

There is a quicker and easier way.
